The Cottage

Fernandina beach house for rent by the week or monthThe charm of this rustic beach cottage is the outstanding view from the front porch, where you can pass the time on the rocking chairs overlooking the ocean.

This 2 bedroom and 1 bath cottage has all of the amenities you are use to at home: full kitchen with dishwasher, a washer and dryer, central air conditioning, internet and cable tv.  There is parking for up to three cars outside, however the garage is not available for parking.

The beach-side bedroom has a queen bed and a small tv.  The back bedroom has two twin beds. The bathroom separates the bedrooms, and like the kitchen it is quaint but functional.

In the Heart of Historic Fernandina Beach

Located just a few houses south of Main Beach, this cottage occupies a premier spot on the Amelia Island beach front.

Seasonal lifeguards stations, Memorial Day to Labor Day, are  just a few steps up the beach from the house, so you and your family can enjoy swimming in the warm ocean in safety.

Historic downtown Fernandina is just two miles down Atlantic Avenue, where you can stroll through past the great shops, restaurants and bars that give Fernandina its great charm.

Dining

Next door is the Elizabeth Point Lodge which is open to the public for breakfast and lunch.  A few houses up the street is the The Sandbar & Kitchen, a Fernandina beachfront institution with great food, a full bar, live music, and a beach side patio. Salt Life Food Shack is a newer addition to the island, and is just shy of 2 blocks north of the cottage.

Downtown Fernandina Beach has a treasure trove of restaurants, from fine dining to pet friendly casual outdoor patios.

History

This tiny beach cottage is special to our family.  I grew up in this house, and our extended family has used this property as a “home base” for festivities and reunions.

My father built this cottage in the late 1930s as a garage and apartment. At that time there were two more houses between this cottage and the ocean. Overtime storms and hurricanes continued to erode the beach, and the front two houses were lost.

In the 1980s the Army Corp of Engineers implemented a beach erosion plan and installed rock barriers under the dunes to prevent the beach from eroding further and protecting the remaining beach houses.

The newly remodeled beach cottage is still “rustic”; it is basically the same as when my father built it with the addition of a few modern conveniences.
